Esteban Gutierrez, Sauber F1 Team reserve and test driver, has joined the team that already counts with personalities such as former motorcycle racing world champion Kevin Schwantz and design by Hermann Tilke´s office.
The venue will be built in Colina and it is intended to host world-class motorcycle and auto racing events.
Renown Formula One and GP2 Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez is now officially part of the international team of ambassadors for Motorpark raceway and multi-functional facility.
RPM Motorsports general manager Cesar “Chachi” Ramos revealed this and remarked that having this new member in the team is very important as this will allow them to “count with a consultant who has experience in Formula One and GP2 - as Esteban does – who is familiar with the conditions and characteristics of international racetracks, which is fundamental to provide Chile with a first class race track that we expect to become the most advanced in Latin America”.
Gutierrez joins Kevin Schwantz, former motorcycle racing world champion, and Hermann Tilke´s architects group, with the objective of providing his knowledge for the design of the facility that will be built in the community of Colina. The goal is to obtain FIA and FIM – International Automobile and Motorcycle Federations – homologation to be able to host international events.
Speaking about this, Team Sauber´s third driver appeared satisfied with the "possibility of being part of this work team and being able to offer my own experience”. Gutierrez explained that “it is extremely important to have a racing facility because that creates the opportunity to develop new talent to represent Chile on international circuits in the future”.
Something Gutierrez knows very well, as he was able to start his racing career at a young age, later becoming the youngest Mexican driver to win an international title of single seaters when he was only 17 years old. His record is impeccable: in 2007 he was crowned rookie of the year and runner-up in the Formula BMW USA; in 2008 he was the youngest ever Mexican driver to test a Formula One car with BMW Sauber Team at 18, and that same year he was champion of the Formula BMW Europe in the first year of the series. In 2010 he won his second championship in Europe by winning the GP3 Series, thus becoming the first champion of the new category that is a Formula One feeder series. All of this was rewarded by being confirmed as reserve and test driver with Sauber F1 Team in 2011 and 2012, and to be a full time driver in the GP2 Series with team Lotus GP.
Characteristics of the project
The multi-funtion complex will be developed on a 180 hectares area in the community of Colina. It comprises a main circuit with FIA and FIM homologation, a ¼ mile race track and other circuits for motocross and kart racing. It is important to emphasize that the facilities will be built under the highest standards to make it one of the more advanced racing complexes in South America, counting also with soccer fields and rodeo arena. There will also be a 7 hectare public park, a facility for trade shows and commercial expos, a venue for concerts and cultural activities, an events center, restaurants and several other services.
