Esteban Gutierrez Comes First in Practice, but Qualifying Becomes More Complicated

June 13, 2009

Zandvoort, Holland – Just as Esteban Manuel Gutiérrez Gutiérrez himself predicted, the qualifying rounds in the Formula 3 Masters were marked by fast curves which put the drivers skills to the test on the Zandvoort Circuit in Holland.

Even though he had never raced on this track, the young 17 year old of the French team ART Grand Prix from the Formula 3 Euroseries 2009, surprised everyone in the first practice round by placing himself in the place of honour from a total of 36 Formula 3 cars.

However, during the first qualifying, while he was seeking to record a best time during the fifth lap to keep himself in first places Esteban skidded on the fourth curve and ran into the gravel and was unable to free himself and could no longer continue.

In the following qualifying session of the day for the group where the Mexican driver was placed, the same mishap occurred in the fifth lap which prevented Gutiérrez from returning back to the track to improve his times.

Esteban will start the race in 32nd place on the grid meaning he will come from behind with the opportunity to have a greater learning experience on this circuit, which he will race at again in July in rounds 7 and 8 of the Forumla 3 Euroseries. The race will take place in 25 laps or 60 minutes.

Gutiérrez closed his activities of the day with a special dinner in the hospitality of Formula BMW Europe, which he was invited to for being the current champion of the Series, where they offered him the opportunity to give a speech about the great experiences he lived during the two years he raced in the Formula BMW.

"Today was a little bit difficult because of the final results in qualifying. At the end, also considering the good result in practice, factors were exposed showing that we are getting close in terms of speed. The best of the situation is to get out of it the positive and keep working because we know that we have the times and we just need to improve our consistency.”

“Although we have to face difficult moments like this, it is important to see the positive things and proceed using the experiences to be able to increase our progress. We know that we have all the elements to get the results. It’s only a question of time for everything to come together in harmony and we will be able to achieve our objectives", commented Esteban Gutiérrez.

Gutiérrez thanks his sponsors Multigama, DeAcero, Telmex, Alpinestars, & Bell for all their support given in this new challenge in the Formula 3 Euroseries.

The young driver especially thanks Telmex for joining him in his purpose to position Mexico at the Forefront of motor racing at a world level.
