Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez finished 8th in qualifying and will start the first race of the GP2 Series at the Yas Marina circuit of Abu Dhabi from that position on the grid.
Gutierrez was fastest in practice, with a best lap time of 1:50.442, while a transmission problem in qualifying forced him out of the session, preventing him from finishing in the top positions.

“We did great, the practice session was very productive for us because we were able to prepare ourselves for the race, gathered good data that is critical to do the best possible job.
“During the qualifying session we knew that we could be competitive, we knew that we had the speed and it was a matter of put all that into one lap. We had a problem with the gearbox and didn´t finish the session, but eighth on the grid is a good position and the race is long; we have a positive mindset for the race”, said the driver after the session.
Esteban was eighth best with a lap time of 1:49.822, with the pole position going to Raging Engineering’s driver Fabio Leimer (1:49.363), followed by Rapax’s Dani Clos (1:49.570) and Josef Král in third (1:49.612).
“Tomorrow we have to make the most of our strategy, we have to be very smart to keep our tires because that is a critical aspect on this track.
“The start will be very important; we are going to try and gain a few places, or at least keep our position and be conservative. We will try to finish the race, which is the most important thing tomorrow, but we obviously will be seeking to achieve a good result” ,he remarked.
Finally, Lotus ART’s driver said that, considering no points are awarded on this event of the F1 feeder series, he will try to be aggressive since the very start of the race.
“We do want to be aggressive. We have tried that and it has paid off, and we are going to see the difference between qualifying and the actual race because we intend to be very quick and to find the right setting for the car.
“We want to increase our chances of overtaking because on this circuit that is a little difficult to do”, said the driver.
