Esteban Gutierrez

Monterrey, Mexico - After nine events and 18 races, Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez finished as the best rookie of the GP2 Series by being the only one to make points in the season.

Gutierrez finished 13th in the championship standings with 15 points, reached the podium two times with one first and one second places, and earned points in four races.

“The more positive thing is that we lived different situations and saw different points of view so if we go through the same again we will know how to get back up if we fall. For me this has been the most educative season of my career.

“It has been an honor to compete against the top quality drivers that you find in this Series such as Romain (Grosjean), Jules (Bianchi), Sam Bird, Luca Filippi, (Dani) Clos; they are all very good and have experience in the series.

One of team Lotus ART’s driver’s best performances of the year was on July 31st at the Hungaroring of Budapest, Hungary, where he moved up 22 positions in the Sprint race to finally take second place from experienced driver Romain Grosjean at the final turn of the last lap of the race.

“That was a great moment, something we wanted to do and we did it; we felt strong and looked solid and in control, we basically made progress right there”, recalled the Mexican in Monza, Italy, after the last event of the year.

The other two rookies this year were Paul Varhaug and Julian Leal, who finished 23 and 27 in the championship standings, without earning any points on their first season in the GP2 Series.

Esteban Gutierrez is back in Monterrey, Mexico to spend a few days with his family before starting his preparation for the next season.

“I know we will be in the GP2 the next season and that is positive for me because I will be able to prepare for the season”, remarked Esteban.
