Esteban Gutierrez

Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez finished 14th in the GP2 Series Feature race that in most part was held under rain at the circuit of Spa-Francorchamps, in Belgium.

Gutierrez started from ninth on the grid but the changing weather conditions caused problems to the Lotus ART car, with Esteban losing several positions as a consequence.

“It was a mixed situation because the start was good but I had a little contact with Van Der Garde and lost some positions there. The strategy was then different because when you are behind the aerodynamics change and for that in the end we progressively lost positions to other cars.

“Then the rain came and the conditions changed again; the car temperature decreased – this happened to several other cars – and it died, I thought that was it for me but marshals pushed the car and I was able to restart it and returned to the pits to adjust the temperature, but I lost a lot of ground”, explained Esteban.

Winner of race one was Christian Vietoris with a time of 1 hour 55.99 seconds; runner up was Esteban’s teammate Jules Bianchi and third arrived Romain Grosjean, who clinched the title with the points earned today.

“It was an impressive race; even when we have had changing weather conditions in the last four events, this one was a very difficult race. Still, I gained more experience by driving under different conditions throughout the race”, said Esteban.

The team and Esteban will face the Sprint race with a different strategy looking to achieve a good result in the next to last event of the F1 feeder series.

“We are going to have a different strategy. We’ll be a little more aggressive in terms of car settings. We hope this works at first and then we will consider weather conditions to make decisions during the race”, he remarked.
