Esteban Gutierrez

Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez earned his first points in the GP2 Series by finishing seventh in the feature race of the weekend in Valencia, Spain.
 
Gutierrez started the race from fifth but fell down to eleventh place when he went off in one corner of the circuit and had to enter the pits early, returning to the track in 16th place to climb back and eventually finish seventh, claiming two championship points in his F1 feeder series debut.

“This race was really a challenge, one of the hardest of my career. At the start I blocked one of the tires causing an unbalance that created a heavy vibration, it was very demanding physically and I was starting to lose visibility and it was a big problem.
 
“I made a mistake in the first corner because I could not see and missed the braking zone, afterwards I focused in not making another mistake, stopped early with a smart pit stop with the team doing a great job which put me in a very good position."
 
With this result, 19-year-old driver will start the sprint race from second place on the grid, thus increasing his chances to add up more points this weekend with team Lotus Art.
 
“This has been a significant step forward for me and the team. Our specific objective for Valencia was to improve from our previous results and we have done it; that is what proves that we are doing a good job as a team.
 
“Tomorrow I expect to do a consistent race, clean and smart, but the main goal is to get to the finish line. We have a very good starting positions but the cars behind us are very competitive and we will be fighting back to try and at least keep our position or -why not- improve it”, he remarked.
 
The winner of the race was Romain Grosjean with a race time of 58 minutes 19.400 seconds, followed by Addax’s team Giedo Van der Garde 15.481 seconds behind, while the third place was for Davide Valsecchi with Air Asia, 20.981 seconds further down. Esteban crossed the finish line 48.097 seconds behind Grosjean.
