Excellent day for Esteban in Valencia after qualifying Fifth

Valencia, Spain - A great performance by Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez in the qualifying session in Valencia put him fifth on the grid for the seventh race of the GP2 Series that will take place tomorrow.

The expectations that team Lotus ART and Esteban himself had set before the session in Valencia were surpassed, which makes him feel satisfied with his performance in qualifying.

“We are really happy because our main objective for Valencia was to show some improvement, to make progress, and we have achieved that in qualifying, which internally is very important for us.

“I expected to be eighth or ninth and we finished fifth and that gives us a good starting point for tomorrow, when the important thing will be to make a solid race regardless of the result”, said Gutierrez.

Even though this is a good result that places him on the third row of the grid for tomorrow’s race, the Mexican and his team are keeping it cool and their focus is to make progress little by little.

“It has to be said that the weekend is not over yet, we still have the race ahead and we must remain focused on what we’re doing and on our job.

“I keep thinking that I am not 100% adapted to the car and I’m still in the learning process and -up to certain point- I am still young but I’m doing my best working together with the team and looking to achieve a good result tomorrow”, he remarked.

A key factor to this result was the revision of the first three events of the season and to analyze the positive and negative aspects of each one of them, as well as the fact that he already knew the circuit and had achieved good results in other series.

“The time we had available to think about and analyze our experience from the first part of the season was very important and allowed us to reflect on every aspect, not only me but the team as well, and we have to continue working with the same mindset and keep moving forward.

“On this track, I was able to focus only in the car and not worry about the circuit, but at the same time we have to think that I am getting more used to the car and that is a step forward, now we continue working on my confidence.”

Esteban’s best lap was 1 minute 46.995 seconds and he hopes he can earn his first points in the GP2 series tomorrow.

“We are going for a smart race, working the strategy because during the race there will be many variables that could change things around and we must be prepared for any kind of situation”, he remarked.
