Esteban will start from the 9th spot in Monaco

Monte Carlo, Monaco - Mexican driver Esteban Gutiérrez ended within the top ten in the qualifying session that took place in the Circuit de Monaco previous to races five and six of the GP2 Series.

Gutiérrez will have the opportunity to start in the ninth position in this Friday’s race, for what he seems pleased and satisfied with the work he and his team Lotus ART did in qualifying.

“We are really happy with these results, especially because we have had a really good time and it has been an incredible experience. It’s been so different from all the normal circuits which makes it special and we are taking all the advantage we can from it.”

“In the end, we wound up well in the results and we took the advantage we could from all the moments because, in reality, we went through a couple of yellow and red flags but we managed to finish in a very good position”, Esteban expressed.

Esteban’s best lap timed was 1 minute and 22.834 seconds during the qualifying session, which allowed him to achieve the ninth place, while in the free practice during the morning he ended up in the eight position with 1 minute 23.931 seconds.

“Due to the red and yellow flags, it was very difficult to do a better lap once I got a great one, that’s why you have to take advantage of that in which you did great, because after that one, I tried to start all over again, but I encountered traffic in the first and second sectors and there was a yellow flag in the third and fourth so I couldn’t continue.

“In the end, being ninth is great and we are very happy because we think we’re in a good spot. The team is very happy as well because it’s a step forward and we will keep working to get better”, he added.

With what transpired today during qualifying, Esteban hopes to earn his first championship points in the F1 feeder series this weekend and he’ll be cautious trying to race in an smart way.

“We keep our feet on the ground, we believe we got a great starting position in ninth, and what’s really important is to do a smart race in all ways that we can. It’d be great to add our first points into the standings, but if that doesn’t happen, we knew we gave our best.”

“Our confidence is growing and will continue to grow little by little, especially under the present conditions; that is why we think today’s result is very positive, for that and for some other reasons”, he concluded.
