Race incident stops Esteban

Barcelona, Spain – After having collided another car on one of the curves of the Catalunya Circuit, Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez was forced to abandon race three of the GP2 Series.

Despite having a good pace after gaining a few positions at the start of the race, a contact on lap 21 against Rumanian driver Michael Herck’s car forced Esteban to abandon the race.

“We had a good pace, our start was great, the pit stop was also good and all the tire management was fine as well. We were in a good position to finish the race but I admit I made a mistake while trying to overtake Herck and having said that, we must move on.

“What happened is that Herck’s tires were in a different condition than mine and he was braking much earlier than me when I approached him; that caught me by surprise and when I reached the corner I did not calculate the braking correctly, I thought there was room for overtaking but there wasn’t. I should have waited a little more”, explained Esteban after the race.

Because of this incident the Mexican could not avoid, the marshals decided to penalize Gutierrez and therefore he will start tomorrow’s race from the back of the grid.

“I have been penalized, and that is only fair because that is what happens when you cause that kind of incidents. I had no option but to recognize my mistake honestly in front of the race marshals.

“The team told me that everything was positive in terms of my pace but then I made a mistake and now we have to learn from that and move on”, he added.

Gutierrez, who is experiencing his first season in the F1 feeder series, is making the most out of today’s experience and his main objective for tomorrow is to finish the race.

“For tomorrow, the most important thing is to finish the race. We will start from the bottom so we don’t have high expectations, but we will try to finish the race and to do it with a good tire management strategy.

“Each movement and each performance must be made with more determination and confidence. I hope to learn from this mistake and to make the most out of the experience”, he remarked.
