Barcelona, Spain – After today’s practice and qualifying sessions, Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez will be on the 16th spot of the grid for Race 3 of the GP2 Series that is taking place on the circuit of Catalunya, in Barcelona, Spain.
The 19-year-old driver improved today his participation in the European series as compared to what happened in Istambul, however there were a few issues in qualifying that, luckily, Esteban and team Lotus ART were able to solve on time.

“Actually, practice and qualifying sessions have gone a little better than in Istambul because we were more consistent; we had a trouble-free practice, and then there was a little technical problem in qualifying but we solved it on time.
“There was an electrical problem with the transmission so I couldn’t shift gears, which affected me because we lost some time fixing it. Fortunately we were able to correct the problem and did all the laps we had planned for the session”, he explained.
Gutierrez, who placed himself 16th with a best lap time of 1’ 32.031s, declared that he is looking for the right balance between speed and control on his first season in the F1 feeder series.
“In general terms, we lack some speed. This time I feel I’ve been more consistent, more in control of the situation, although with a lack of speed. The good thing is that we have a good benchmark as my teammate (Jules Bianchi) is posting good times.
“The thing with the tires is that they play a major role because everything has to be almost perfect during almost two laps. That said, it is hard to not find the pace because we do one lap and cool down and then we do another lap and cool down, it´s very complicated", he added.
Talking about his expectations for tomorrow’s race, Mexican driver said that he is only seeking to do a good job, give his best and by doing that, the results will follow.
“I have to be realistic; we have not made good times today but the first laps are going to be crucial as I have to avoid any contact with other cars and after that the race is long. We are going to be focused.
“We are not in the best place right now but we are going to keep working. We are looking for a technique to work in the best way possible. I am ok, this is not a big surprise because I´ve been taking things easy since the beginning. We must be realistic and do things with intelligence to improve, and I am doing my best effort”, he remarked.
