The GP2 Main Series season is about to start and Mexican driver Esteban Gutiérrez is ready to begin his career in the F1 feeder series this weekend in Istambul, Turkey, where races one and two will take place.
The excitement for starting this new stage in his career is at the maximum level, but at the same time, Lotus Art driver is calm and committed to start achieving good results.

“To be honest, we are looking forward to the start of the season, we have had a lot of time to prepare for this, and although testing time was limited we must be realistic and continue working hard.
“We have to consider that I am still a rookie and that racing is not the same as testing, and that it will take some time but we will be focused on the job at hand to get adapted as soon as possible", said Esteban.
Gutierrez mentioned he still lacks track time and experience to be better adapted to the car, although what he learned in the GP2 Asia series and during testing have helped him be more confident ahead of this weekend.
“It is difficult to measure precisely how adapted I am now, but I think I need more pit stop experience as well as in different things that I have not gone through before, though I know that will come with time; we are going to make the most out of this opportunity and to try and achieve good results, being patient, one step at a time.
“All the activity that we had since the beginning of the year gives me an idea of what it is like, and I can prepare myself mentally from the experience I got from the GP2 Asia races, which I have present in my mind”, he added.
The racetrack where the two first rounds of the season are to take place is Istambul Park, which has a length of 5.338km and was built for the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Turkey.
“Last year we had a very good result on this track, although this year it’s a different car. This is a rather fast track where tires degrade very quickly; it has a very long curve, the famous Eight, which is also very fast.
“We are going to work on the car to be conservative during the race, but at the same time we will have a more aggressive approach in qualifying, which we have been lacking”, he remarked.
He will report to Sauber.
Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez will attend the F1 race in Turkey to be on duty as a reserve and test driver for Sauber F1 Team, where he expects to acquire new experience that he can use in GP2.
“This is the first time I will be together with Sauber as reserve and test driver, although the main focus is on the GP2, but I will be sharing with them information that can help me.
“Basically the time there will be limited by my duties in GP2, which is my main focus and it’s something they (Sauber) understand and respect, and something I am thankful for because for me it is very important to focus on one thing and not get stressed by others", concluded the young Mexican driver.
