Barcelona, Spain – With the goal of making the best use of the track time available, Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez begins his last official GP2 training in Barcelona, prior to the start of 2011 season.
Just as he usually does during testing, Esteban will focus on the tests and not on the final times because what’s important is to collect information from the car that will be very useful in the races.

“I think these training sessions are very important as they are the last sessions before the start of the season, and it will be very important to make the most out of them. The weather is going to be fine and that is positive because we´ll be able to continue our program as planned.
“The training sessions do not have much value as a result, instead they are used as reference and it is time that we use to have a reference point, and many things are tested that cause variation in lap times and results.”
In specific terms, Gutierrez and his team Lotus ART will work with the tires just like they did during the first training sessions on the Silverstone circuit, with the idea of arriving to the first race of the F1 feeder series prepared as best as possible.
“Our mindset is to work on our car, not to go and work to catch up the others. We are using our time to work and will focus on a program similar to what we did in Silverstone.
“We are going to work on the tires; there is going to be a different compound and it’s going to be interesting to see how the tires react. It’s going to be a good starting point for the races this season.”
The 4.655 km long circuit of Catalunya, where the official training is taking place, is not new to the young driver, who has competed there in different series.
“It’s a track that I already know and that is a personal advantage because I don’t have to worry about learning the track and I can just focus on the car, which is good. It’s also going to be interesting because I’ve been on this track with the Formula BMW, F3, and GP3 cars, and now in GP2 so we´re going to feel the difference.
“We are just going to focus on specific things of the car and my adaptation to it, as well as on several other things that I need to improve in.”
Prior to the official test, Esteban had the opportunity to make a few trips to work with potential sponsors and kept working on the physical aspect, besides having work meetings with his team.
