Northamptonshire, England - Due to the weather conditions that were registered at the Silverstone Circuit, where rain was present this morning, the Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez and his team Lotus ART changed their original plan during the first day of the GP2 Series official test.
It was a productive day for 19 year old driver, after he set the third fastest time this morning with a lap time of 1m56.236s, and also was able to test different settings that will be useful when the proper conditions appear during the new season of the feeder series to F1.
“It was actually very productive because I had never tested the GP2 car under rain conditions and this has been a good opportunity to know how it is under such conditions and to test different settings with wet tyres.
“For us it was too important to understand that phase and to be prepared for it when the time comes to race under rain, now we have a benchmark and we gathered many good reference points”, said Esteban.
During the second session, that took place in the afternoon, Gutierrez and his team decided to go on track for the last 15 minutes to finish 21st with a time of 1m43.125s
“In the afternoon, unfortunately because of the weather conditions, the track was drying up and there was a mid point when it was meaningless to be on the track so we decided to wait until the end of the session. We took the track during the last 15 minutes so we couldn’t do much.
“It actually was a very positive day. Sadly the weather affected our work program but we will try and finish it tomorrow and do as much as we can if the weather is better”, he added.
Esteban Gutierrez will have two more sessions tomorrow in which the team will run several tests to improve the handling and behavior of the car.
“Tomorrow we have to focus on the tests we want to run to improve the car and the rest will be a reference point. I think the results are not so important at this point and we must focus on the job.
“We want to improve in qualifying and that is an important aspect of the set up, we must try different traction settings to understand how the tyres react under each situation”, he remarked.
