F1 Prospects Watchlist: Esteban Gutiérrez–Mexico–GP3 Series

April 7, 2010

Montreal,Canada - Mexican driver Esteban Gutiérrez has amply demonstrated his speed throughout his short career and in the process could very well be the first Mexican to race in Formula 1 since I believe Pedro Rodríguez.

From an outstanding career in karts both in Mexico and internationally that started in 2004, it was pretty obvious to all that Gutiérrez had what it took to compete against the best young guns around. This was confirmed when he moved up to cars and won Rookie of the Year honors in his first season racing Formula BMW USA where he finished 2nd in the overall championship, with 4 wins, 8 podiums and 9 pole positions.

From Formula BMW USA he moved on to Formula BMW Europe where he won the championship in style winning 7 races (including six consecutively) before finishing that off with a 3rd place in the Formula BMW World Finals in Mexico City just behind Alexander Rossi and Michael Christensen. In 2009 he graduated to the F3 Euro Series with powerhouse French team ART Grand Prix where he finished 9th with two podiums.

2010 sees him running in the brand new GP3 Series with ART Grand Prix which is a support series to GP2, the ultimate stepping stone to Formula 1. Testing has been going well with Gutiérrez not having lost any of his speed so with the solid reputation of ART behind him, look for the Mexican to make an impression on the GP2 teams and more importantly, some F1 managers. GP3 looks to be set to have a cracking inaugural championship in 2010. Make sure you catch it if you can.
