Jerez de la Frontera, Spain – On his first and only day testing a GP2 car, Mexican driver Esteban Manuel Gutierrez Gutierrez surpassed all expectations and showed he is in great physical shape.
Esteban tested with French team ART Grand Prix, champion of the 2009 season of the GP2 series, as part as his intense preparation for the Formula One test that will take place next December in the same track.
Gutierrez participated in two sessions, one in the morning and the other one in the afternoon, finishing eleventh and sixth, respectively, and recording the third fastest time among the ten rookie drivers who took part in the test.
For Esteban, it was the second session when he did better as he was fastest among 24 drivers at the beginning of the afternoon session. This shows his good shape driving a car that is almost three times more powerful than a car of the Formula 3 Euroseries.
“Today’s test was very interesting in various aspects because we were able to get a perspective of what it is to drive a car with so much horsepower and an incredible grip throughout the corners”, said Esteban.
“I have to say that preparing for this kind of training takes a lot of time and effort, especially for the Formula One test that we have scheduled for the last month of this year. This GP2 test is part of that process. The GP2 car is 200 kilos heavier and almost three times more powerful than a Formula 3 car, which demands from the driver a better physical condition".
“Considering the experience all the other drivers have, it is evident that we are moving in the right direction in every aspect, although we have to continue this way to achieve and progress even more. This has been an experience I will never forget, we had good reference from the best team and I think we got the best out of our track time today”.
“I feel blessed for having these opportunities and the privilege to work with teams that have so much experience. We are positive that this will help us in the future and I want to continue working in the same direction to keep moving up, one step at a time, to put Mexico’s name in the top”, remarked the young driver.
Esteban is flying to Dijon, France, tomorrow, to participate in rounds 17 and 18 of the Formula 3 Euroseries that will take place this weekend. His objective is adding up more points to his tally and move up in the drivers’ championship, where he is ninth with 20 points.
Esteban thanks his sponsors Multigama, DeAcero, Telmex, Alpinestars, and Bell for supporting him on this stage of his career.
