Improving qualifying is key to Esteban
June 5th, 2013 - Esteban Gutiérrez is flying to Montreal this morning to take part in the seventh round of the Formula One season, the Grand Prix of Canada.
Before getting in the plane, Sauber Team's driver recognized he must make some adjustments at the time of qualifying to improve his results.
“My weak point right now is qualifying, that is where I can make some improvement, especially in the final part so I can consolidate a good result; it is true that qualifying conditions have been complicated, like in Monaco where there was rain that changes everything; you need some luck with the tires but all of that is part of Formula One”, he said.
A the start of his racing career Esteban had the opportunity to race at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit, the venue where the next round is taking place.
“I competed in Montreal in 2007 with the Formula BMW series, that was one of my first races and so it is kind of special for me. This circuit has a characteristic that makes it different to the rest, it is that the tarmac is quite smooth and that will have a big effect on the tires, let's see how they react”, he remarked.
Esteban has not set any expectations for the Canadian Grand Prix as they will have to wait until the practice to see how the car adapts to the track.
“It is difficult to set expectations at Montreal because - as we all know - it changes a lot. Some tracks are better suited for our car than others, we have to see where we are in practice, we hope the little changes we do to the car's aerodynamics will benefit us and compensate the weaknesses we had in other circuits.
“Montreal is very important for us because there are very long straights and we need to have a very efficient aerodynamic package which will influence on our potential”, said Gutiérrez.
On a different note, Esteban said that the team is preparing a few modifications to the car, on the aerodynamics aspect, hoping this will help improve both in Canada and in Silverstone.
