Esteban will start from 14th
12-10-2013.- Mexican driver Esteban Gutiérrez was 14th fastest in qualifying, and will start tomorrow's Japan Grand Prix from that grid position.
On Q1, Esteban did a timed lap and returned to the pits, where fire started coming out of the car, affecting Sauber team for a brief moment.
"I really don't know what happened (about the fire), it was not the best moment in qualifying when you are totally focused. We lost some time and pace as well.
"In the end we were able to put on some good laps, there was not much more to do today. I finished two tenths of a second slower than Nico who is also on the border of the top ten, in general terms we have to be optimistic because our race pace is very good", he explained.
Almost at the end of Q2 the session was red flagged after Jean-Eric Vergne's car caught fire, leaving the drivers with enough time for only one lap.
"It was very tight. My lap was very good and next time I just have to see that I cut those two tenths that I need to be in the top ten.
"It is important to keep the same pace, which definitely is more difficult in Suzuka because our car is not as competitive here as in other tracks, but we are pushing as much as we can", he said.
About his approach to the race, Gutiérrez said it is not about being aggressive but to follow a good strategy to reach the points for the first time.
"It's about making a smart race, it's not aggressiveness but strategy, it's knowing when to overtake and when not to; I am learning and trying to make progress at the time and as quickly as I can.
"We are not to fast on sector one and that is where we lose time, but we will be in a good position in the race", he remarked.
